You can be the author of your own life.
You can have the necessary integrity, self-responsibility
and self-love to be this way.

Responding to Illness

When there has been a diagnosis of a major illness, there is an enormous impact on the caregiver, patient and other family members. There are often feelings of confusion and powerlessness. People are often afraid and angry. There are the inevitable questions such as "Why me?" or "Why us?"

There are many questions and unknowns. The impact on the caregiver, patient, family and friends is often deep and far-reaching.

For the patient there are challenges long after the diagnoses of illness. There is treatment that is often painful and difficult. There is convalescence which may be long term. The illness may be terminal.

Mentoring & Guidance

I offer mentoring and counselling to people who:

  • find themselves in the role of caregiver.
  • are facing major illnesses.
  • are impacted by the diagnosis of a loved one: family members, friends.

During the mentoring and counseling sessions, clients have an opportunity to learn:

  • the difference between acceptance and resignation as they face the myriad of challenges that confront them.
  • to be responsive rather than reactive.
  • a range of stress-reduction strategies for calming oneself during feelings of stress, anxiety or overwhelm.
  • to move beyond being stuck and to establish alternative perspectives that better serve oneself.
  • to live more fully in the here and now.

There will be an emphasis on and the encouragement to move beyond defining oneself in terms of a specific illness; eg. a cancer patient, stroke victim, heart attack survivor.

Caregivers or family members are encouraged to move beyond defining themselves in terms of a patient’s illness.

People often need help to bring family members together to face difficult situations. I assist clients to accept the support offered by others, while maintaining their independence.
